Back in the day, asbestos was a super popular roofing material in Australia until it was realised that asbestos wasn’t so great for our health. So, it got banned in Australia. If your house is old, chances are good that your roof contains some asbestos.
Asbestos was the roofing material of choice because it came with many advantages. Asbestos is lightweight yet sturdy, water-resistant and heat-resistant and it even makes other materials stronger when mixed in.
One common asbestos-containing product was corrugated cement sheeting. This corrugated cement was used all over the place for roofing, fencing, you name it. Plus, asbestos was affordable.
Why It’s a Big Deal If Asbestos Fibres Get Disturbed
Asbestos is one of the main reasons you need to replace that old roof. See, those asbestos fibres in roofing materials are seriously dangerous if they get into your lungs. One can suffer from illnesses like mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
Here’s how it goes down – those fibres get stuck deep in your lung tissue and your body just can’t get rid of them. So it tries to absorb and contain the fibres, but that causes nasty scarring which leads to those diseases.
The really tricky part is that when those asbestos fibres get disturbed and become airborne, they’re a huge health hazard. You could be breathing them in without even realising it because these are too tiny to see.
As asbestos roofing materials like that old cement sheeting start to deteriorate, those fibres are way more likely to get knocked loose and become airborne. Lots of activities can accidentally release those fibres into the air. These activities can be storms, high winds, roof washing, cutting or drilling, using power tools or even walking on the roof.
Hiring Licensed Asbestos Removal Contractors Is a Must
Qualified asbestos removal contractors know how to carefully handle that asbestos stuff. They suit up in protective gear and are super careful not to disturb those fibres any more. If you try asbestos roof removal yourself, you’re taking a huge risk.
See, if those materials break down and get into the air, you could easily inhale the fibres. That could lead to major illnesses down the road. So, leave that tricky asbestos roof removal work to the experts who know what they’re doing.
A licensed asbestos removal service understands all the dangers. They take every precaution to ensure you, your family and your surroundings don’t get exposed to those nasty fibres during asbestos roof replacement.
